Do long distance movers charge by weight or volume?
The industry uses both, but a written fixed quote matters more than the method.
Long distance movers charge by weight, by volume, or a mix of both. Big van lines usually weigh the truck before and after loading. Container movers usually charge by the cubic feet you fill. Neither method is wrong on its own.
The problem shows up after pickup. If your quote is only an estimate, the final bill can grow. The load weighs more than guessed. Or it takes more space than planned. Now you owe more, and your goods are already on the truck.
The fix is simple. Get a written fixed quote after a real survey. A good mover looks at your home first, in person or on video. Then they put one firm number in writing. That number cannot grow in transit, no matter what the scale says.
When you compare quotes, compare the method too. Ask each mover if the price is fixed or an estimate. Ask what happens if the weight comes in higher. The answers tell you a lot about the company.
